Callisto, Jupiter's outermost and most remote moon, is a fascinating world of ice, rock, and mystery. It's the Solar System's third-largest moon, nearly as big as Mercury, and holds the title of the most heavily cratered surface in the Solar System. This is due to its lack of tidal heating, preserving billions of years of impact history. Its surface is almost entirely 4.5 billion years old, with multi-ringed basins and small knobs and pits, believed to be relics of even more craters. It's made of rock and ice, with water ice predominating, and has a very thin atmosphere of carbon dioxide and molecular oxygen. Its internal structure is not well understood, with a possible subsurface ocean and a silicate core. Despite its radiation levels, NASA has considered it as a possible space base, and three upcoming missions will explore it further. However, the most intriguing aspect of Callisto is its potential to host life, if its subsurface ocean exists.
